Artificial light
Any non natural light source is artificial light. Examples of artificial light include LED lights, studio flashlights, camera pop-up flashlights, flashlights, street lamps, or desk lamps. Technically speaking, all light sources except for sunlight, moonlight, and starlight are artificial light.
Although artificial light sources may sound complex and expensive, the fact is not so. Advanced professional grade strobe lights are indeed very expensive. But you can also purchase cheap DIY solutions. Some lights do have complex settings, but most lights are relatively easy to use. The easiest to use are continuous lighting LED lights because they have a simple dimmer switch.
Let's take a quick look at the 5 main artificial light sources used in photography.
- Flashing light
Flash, also known as single light, is the industry standard for studio lighting. The bright light emitted by the flash is comparable to that of camera flash photography. The main difference is that the flash of the flash is brighter and can produce strong short lights. Due to the large amount of power required for this independent flash, AC power supply is usually used.
Strobe light
Flashlights may be the most commonly used artificial light in photography. However, due to the short duration of flashing, strobe lights are not suitable for shooting videos.
Flashlights are expensive because they require many accessories such as brackets, light adjusters, and replacement bulbs. This type of photography lighting equipment is bulky and difficult to use outside of photography studios due to its use of alternating current. Common light sources for flash kits include xenon flash bulbs, halogen bulbs, and LED bulbs.
The main advantage of a flash is its short call back time. The full power output range is 100 to 1000 watts. If you purchase a flash with higher power output, you can effectively use it over longer distances. Another useful feature of certain models is the ability to adjust the output to capture close-up shots using low-intensity light.
2. Continuous lighting
A constant light, also known as a hot light, is always on. These bright, high-power lights will not flash. Always on lights are an affordable option and very suitable for beginners. Since the light is always on, you can clearly see the appearance of the subject before shooting. Another advantage of using the constant light kit is that beginners find it much easier to adjust white balance. - In most cases, adding some light will improve the quality of the photo. But if the flash is too expensive or not working, continuous lights can provide you with an effective solution. But the downside is that these lights will quickly heat up. This is the reason for the nickname 'Hot Lamp'. Continuous lights also require AC power, otherwise the battery will quickly drain. Choosing the most suitable lighting equipment for your photography can be a challenge, as continuous lights come in various shapes, sizes, and color temperatures. Photography floodlights are the most basic type. This inexpensive system uses incandescent bulbs and reflectors. The quartz lamp system is the next step. These incandescent bulbs are much brighter than standard photographic floodlights. A brighter option is the HMI (Hydrargyrum arc iodide) light used in movie scenes. These lamps generate more electricity than quartz lamps, but they are very expensive. The problem with photography floodlights, quartz lights, and HMI lights is that they can become very hot during use. We have two other options that are considered 'cold light'. One is a fluorescent continuous light system. Although this system produces unsightly green light, it can be offset by using daylight balance tubes to produce pleasant flicker free light. The advantage of this system is that its price range can match any budget. Compared to the other four lighting options, the continuous LED lighting system generates less heat. This energy-saving lighting system can maintain coolness even after prolonged use. The main advantage of this lighting system is that the daylight colored lighting produced by the LED looks very natural. Overall, continuous lighting systems can be an effective choice for home studio lighting. If your budget is limited, you can start with photography floodlights. But if you're planning to invest more money in photography lighting equipment, fluorescent or LED lights would be great.
- 3. Flash
Flash, also known as external flash, is a camera flash device installed on the camera hot shoe. If you want to take your flash outdoors, this lightweight flash is the perfect choice. The most basic thing is that you can use one or multiple flash lights to add more light to your photos. When natural light is insufficient, you can also creatively use a flash.
Photography lighting equipment
Compared to standard camera flashes, this photography lighting device produces faster flash speeds. You also need to use a light regulator, such as a flash diffuser. You can use the flash on or off the camera. You can also connect multiple flashlights together to flash simultaneously, creating a mini studio anytime, anywhere. The main drawback of flashlights is that they are not as powerful as strobe lights. You also need to charge them frequently because they use batteries.
The main advantage of using an external flash is that it allows you to rotate the flash head. This action, in turn, will 'reflect' light from suitable objects such as walls or ceilings. When you rotate the flash head and reflect light from the wall or ceiling, you will get a larger light source. This type of light will also be much softer than the light provided by the built-in flash.
You don't need to invest a lot of money in the flash. Buying an original flash is a good idea, although it is slightly more expensive. - 4. Bar lights
Strip lights are redesigned LED light strips with sufficient foot candles and higher light output, suitable for any type of photography project. LED strip lights come in multiple colors and brightness, completely changing photography as they maintain relative coolness and have a long lifespan.
Light belt
The main advantage of this lighting is that the LED strip is adjustable. According to project requirements, you can cut the light strip into several inches to several feet long. You can also bend the ultra-thin LED strip vertically up to 90 degrees. Therefore, their flexibility means that you can even install them in hard to reach places. LED light strips also come in a variety of colors to choose from, from any shade of white to any color. You can adjust and control the precise color and brightness. You can also use DMX and dimming controllers, home lighting systems, and remote controls to dim LED light strips. LED strip lights have a lower cost of ownership and are an attractive option. LED light strips allow you to fully control CRI (color rendering index), length, brightness, and voltage. We also provide waterproof and dustproof LED light strips. These types of lights are ideal for capturing jewelry and diamonds. -
5. Circular light
Circular light, also known as circular flash or continuous circular light, is a type of circular light. This type of lamp is designed to be placed directly in front of the subject being photographed. Then, you can place the camera at the center of the ring to take photos. You can use circular lights to achieve excellent results and take interesting portraits. - Other light sources often produce bright light in certain parts of the subject, while other parts are in glaring shadows. In contrast, a correctly set circular light will uniformly illuminate all surfaces. With this inexpensive photography lighting device, you can take high-quality photos and videos.
Compared to fluorescent ring lights, LED ring lights consume less power and have a longer lifespan. The effect of LED ring lights is also softer. Adjustable ring lights provide you with more features and better control of color temperature. The price range of circular lights is also very wide.
in short
No matter where you start - flash, continuous light, flash, strip light, or ring light. You can quickly and inexpensively accumulate the required lighting regulators and other lighting equipment.
Unlike natural light, artificial lighting requires money. But no matter what kind of photography lighting equipment you purchase, the joy lies in trying it out on your own. Please remember, this is always about change and improvement. You can easily elevate photos to new creative heights by slightly changing camera settings or altering the position of the subject or light source being photographed. Overall, you need a lot of practice and patience to improve your ability to correctly illuminate the subject being photographed.
